Common Collagen Quetions

What is Collagen? Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It is a primary building block of skin, hair, nails, bones, tendons, joints, and cartilage. It is considered the “glue that holds the body together”.

Why do we need Collagen? As people age, the production of collagen in the body begins to slow down and cell structures start losing their strength. Supplementing with collagen is a way to help your body rejuvenate and stay youthful. Continued research shows that consistent use of collagen, along with a whole foods diet, may encourage increased mobility by way of healthy tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.

What does collagen do for my skin, hair and nails? Collagen works from the inside out to boost skin, hair, and nails. It improves elasticity and tone, plus restores moisture. Collagen needs to be consumed regularly, for a minimum of 30 days, to begin to see results- remember, cell turnover and restructure takes time. Many skin issues start in the gut, supporting and nourishing your gut is the first step in attaining healthy skin. VP Beauty Collagen has added nutrients to aid in skin health.

Ok, so I know collagen can be beneficial to my skin, hair and nails, but what else does it do? Collagen helps improve liver function, improves digestion and supports overall gut health. Consistent use of collagen may help restore the stomach & repair the digestive lining. It helps many people stay regular.

What are the different types of collagen and do I need to pay attention to that? There are over 28 different types of collagen, however the most common are I, II, and III. Types I and III are known for supporting skin, hair, nails, and bones. Type II collagen supports joints and cartilages. I recommend taking type II apart from I and III for maximum effectiveness. I also recommend taking type II collagen on an empty stomach. VP type II collagen is available in VP Cartilage Collagen capsules.

Why do you recommend Vital Proteins? Does the brand really matter? Yes, the brand matters! There are other quality brands available, however I feel most confident recommending VP for several reasons. VP is certified organic by CCOF. Their collagen peptides are sourced from grass-fed+pasture raised cows in Brazil; a country where adding hormones to feed is illegal . VP monitors and closely observes the cattle they use to make collagen.  VP tests every batch through a third party certified lab for heavy metals and microbiological components.

Why collagen and not whey? Your body needs both forms of protein. Lets discuss the differences…

Whey is a complete protein, collagen is not. A complete protein means the protein source contains at least the 9 essential amino acids. ‘Essential’ meaning they must come from your diet because your body cannot make them. Collagen is not a complete protein, however, its amino acid structure is made up of unique amino acids which are lacking in our modern diet.

Whey can cause digestive and skin issues in some individuals, collagen often aids in digestion and supports healthy skin, hair and nails.

Whey is quickly digested making it a great source of protein for exercise recovery and muscle growth because it contains BCAA’s (branch chain amino acids.) Meat, poultry, fish and dairy also contain BCAA’s. Most people eat an amble amount of this source of protein.

Collagen is not regularly consumed today as it was years ago when people ate nose to tail and made broth using bones and chicken feet. Supplementing with VP products is an easy way to add it to your diet.

Collagen is high in several anti-inflammatory amino acids which plants, animals and dairy proteins are missing. These amino acids are required for the body to build collagen.

Collagen is important for exercise recovery because it has been shown to support the rebuilding of joints and ligaments.

If I tolerate whey, can I consume it? Absolutely. Grass fed, GMO-free, hormone and antibiotic- free are all important things to look for. I would also recommend staying away from products which add sugar, inflammatory ingredients (corn, soy, gluten, grains, legumes), preservatives, and colors. VP makes a ‘whey collagen’ which is an ideal formula in my mind.

Collagen Coffee

If you drink coffee, an easy way to incorporate collagen into your diet is by adding it to your coffee.

You can simply stir it in to hot or cold coffee and it will dissolve effortlessly. But, if you want to take it to the next level, use an immersion blender or counter blender to blend your coffee, collagen, and creamer.

Something magical happens when you blend collagen and coffee. Instantly you have a creamy, frothy, creation. Dare I say, it may even top the froth at your favorite coffee house.

Four Sigmatic * Vital Proteins * Califia Farms * Nutpods

My go to coffee is Four Sigmatic. Yes, I use instant coffee. Now, before you judge me, if you haven’t tried Four Sigmatic, you MUST! It is the smoothest coffee I have ever tasted, it has adaptogens for added benefits and a lower caffeine level. More on all that another day.

The Process: Heat water to boiling, pour it into a large glass container. Then add one scoop VP collagen, or a single serve packet, a splash of almond milk and creamer. Next, blend with an immersion blender until frothy. Pour into a coffee cup, sit down and enjoy! You can alternatively use a counter blender, but be careful of putting hot liquid in the blender.
